The 193rd SOS is the group's operational squadron and has flown the EC-130E since 1977. The unit was formed in September 1967 at Olmstead AFB (now Harrisburg IAP) as the 193rd Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron with the EC-121S and C-121C. The 193rd was redesignated a Special Operations Squadron from April 1977 until December 1977, when it reverted to TEWS status. The unit began its conversion to the EC-130E in 1977. Designation was changed to the 193rd Electronic Composite Squadron in October 1980 but reverted to the 193rd SOS in mid-1984.
